Crop PDF pages

Remove wide margins from scans and printouts so the content fills the screen, or cut a fixed amount from each edge. Auto-trim measures every page on your device; a preview shows the crop before you download.

Crop PDF

or drop it here. The file stays on this device.

How it works

  1. Choose or drop a PDF file.
  2. Pick automatic trimming (with a margin to keep) or fixed margins in millimetres (typed, or set by dragging the crop box on the preview, its edges or its corners), and the pages; check the preview. To leave nothing outside the crop in the file, tick Remove what is cropped away.
  3. Press Crop PDF and download the result.

Questions

How does automatic trimming decide what to cut?

Each selected page is drawn on your device at a low resolution and the smallest rectangle containing every pixel darker than near-white is kept, plus the margin you set (5 mm by default): a pixel counts when its red, green or blue is below 245 of 255. Accuracy is about 2 pt. Gray backgrounds, borders and scanner noise that dark count as content, so a dirty scan may keep more than you expect; marks fainter than that, such as a very pale border or off-white paper, are taken for white and can be cut away. Check the preview, and use fixed margins in either case. A page with nothing on it is left as it is, except with "Same crop on every page": there the smallest cut on any side wins and every selected page gets that crop, blank pages included, so all pages end up the same size when they started the same size. The preview and the result say when a blank page is cropped this way.

Is the cropped-away content really gone?

Not by cropping alone. Cropping sets the page's visible area (CropBox, with TrimBox, BleedBox and ArtBox), so viewers and printers show only the new area, but the page's full size (MediaBox) and the original content are still inside the file and can be restored by anyone who edits the boxes. Tick Remove what is cropped away to remove it: each cropped page is then replaced by a picture of what stays, made on your device at 200 dpi (less for a very large page), and nothing of that page outside the crop stays in the file. The cost: the page's text can no longer be selected, searched or read aloud, its links and form fields go, the file may grow, and the document's tags for screen readers are removed. The result names the pages turned into pictures.

What about rotated pages and pages that were cropped before?

Margins are measured as the page appears on screen, so top means the top you see even on rotated pages. Cutting starts from the page's current visible area, and if a page would end up narrower or shorter than 20 pt, the crop is refused and no file is made.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The page loads a PDF engine into your browser and every operation runs on your device. You can check this yourself in the browser's network panel: after the page has loaded there are no upload requests. Closing the tab discards the file.

Do I need an account or to pay?

No. These basic tools are free, have no page or file limits set by us, and never add a watermark. The practical limit is your device's memory.

What about password-protected PDFs?

Encrypted PDFs cannot be processed here. Remove the password first, then use this tool.

What does this page keep in my browser?

Nothing you open or type. While the tab is open, the tool pages keep a short list of the steps taken in it, in the tab's session storage: the step (page opened, started, succeeded, first success, used again or failed), the tool's name, the time, how many files were used and, for a failure, an error code; never a file name, the contents of a file or your text. It holds at most the latest 200 steps, and the browser deletes it when the tab closes. The page never sends it. Where a Report a problem button is shown, you can attach the last 20 steps to your report; nothing is attached unless you tick that box. In local storage the page keeps only choices you made: a Light or Dark theme until you choose System again, the language you picked with the EN / 中文 switch if it differs from your browser's language, and this tool in your recently used list if you switched that list on at the tools page.
