SVG pattern maker

Pick a shape or choose your own SVG or image motif, choose the repeat rule (square grid, half drop, brick or mirror), the cell size, the motif size and rotation and the colours, and watch a 3 × 3 preview with the tile edges marked so any seam would show. Download the tile as SVG, a 1024 px fill SVG, PNGs at the size you choose and a short README with the print size. Everything runs inside your browser.

SVG pattern maker

How it works

  1. Choose a built-in shape, or pick your own SVG or image file as the motif.
  2. Set the repeat rule, cell size, motif size, rotation and colours. The 3 × 3 preview updates as you go; the dashed lines mark the tile edges.
  3. Download the SVG tile, the fill SVG, the PNGs or everything as a ZIP.

Questions

Why is the tile always seamless?

Every motif is drawn at its cell and again at the eight neighbouring tile positions, then clipped to the tile. Whatever crosses the right edge therefore reappears on the left, and whatever crosses the bottom reappears at the top. Repeating the tile edge to edge in any direction continues the pattern exactly. The dashed lines in the preview mark the tile edges so you can see it for yourself.

What do the repeat rules mean?

Square grid places one motif per cell. Half drop shifts every second column down by half a cell, so the tile is two cells wide. Brick shifts every second row right by half a cell, so the tile is two cells tall. Mirror flips the motif horizontally in every second column and vertically in every second row, so the tile is two by two cells. The tile size in pixels is shown under the preview.

Can I use my own motif?

Yes: an SVG with a viewBox or a width and height, or a PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF. It is embedded in the tile as an image, scaled to fit the cell at the motif size you choose, and never uploaded. The motif colour setting only applies to the built-in shapes; your own file keeps its colours.

What is in the downloads?

pattern-tile.svg is the repeat unit in pixels: one cell for the square grid, two cells for half drop and brick, two by two for mirror. pattern-fill-1024.svg is a 1024 × 1024 px area filled with the pattern through an SVG pattern element, handy for a background. pattern-tile-<width>.png is the tile rasterised at the width you chose; pattern-sheet-3x3.png is nine tiles as one raster, three times the tile PNG's width and height, each tile at its own size; a browser that cannot draw a canvas that large (iOS Safari stops at 16.7 million pixels: the sheet of a 2048 px tile, or of a brick's tall tile from 1024 px) leaves the sheet out and says so. README.txt records the settings and the size the PNG prints at for the dpi you chose. PNGs keep transparency when you choose a transparent background.

What is not here?

No colour variants from a palette, no batch export of several colourways, no licence list, and no automatic detection of seams in a motif you drew with its own repeat. Rotation is limited to 0, 45 and 90 degrees.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The page loads a small script into your browser and every calculation runs on your device. You can check this yourself in the browser's network panel: after the page has loaded there are no upload requests. Closing the tab discards what you entered.

Do I need an account or to pay?

No. These basic tools are free, have no limits set by us and store nothing on our servers.

What does this page keep in my browser?

Nothing you open or type. While the tab is open, the tool pages keep a short list of the steps taken in it, in the tab's session storage: the step (page opened, started, succeeded, first success, used again or failed), the tool's name, the time, how many files were used and, for a failure, an error code; never a file name, the contents of a file or your text. It holds at most the latest 200 steps, and the browser deletes it when the tab closes. The page never sends it. Where a Report a problem button is shown, you can attach the last 20 steps to your report; nothing is attached unless you tick that box. In local storage the page keeps only choices you made: a Light or Dark theme until you choose System again, the language you picked with the EN / 中文 switch if it differs from your browser's language, and this tool in your recently used list if you switched that list on at the tools page.
