Teleprompter
Paste your script, set the pace in words per minute or fit it to the length you have, and read from a full-screen prompter with a reading line, a countdown and a mirror mode for teleprompter glass. It runs in your browser: the script is not uploaded or saved.
Teleprompter
- Runs on your deviceNo upload. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
- Free, no accountNo sign-up, nothing stored on our servers. Limits: scripts up to 200,000 characters.
- FormatsYour script (typed, pasted or a .txt file) in; a scrolling prompter on screen out
- Works onCurrent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, desktop and mobile.
How it works
- Paste or type your script, or open a .txt file. Put stage directions in [square brackets]: they are shown as cues in another colour and not counted as spoken words.
- Set the pace in words per minute, or type a target length such as 3:00 and press Fit pace to length. Choose the text size, spacing, width, colours, mirroring and countdown; the preview shows the result. Or tick Follow my voice: where your browser recognises your language on this device, the prompter moves with your reading.
- Press Start prompter. The script scrolls past the reading line; Space pauses, the arrow keys change the pace or jump, Escape closes. The page then shows how long the run took.
Questions
How is the scrolling speed set?
In words per minute, the way speakers measure pace: about 130 to 150 is a calm presentation, 160 to 180 a brisk one. The prompter scrolls so that the whole script takes exactly the time that pace gives, whatever the text size or screen. Type a target length and Fit pace to length sets the pace for you, between 60 and 300 words per minute. While the prompter runs, the up and down arrow keys change the pace by 10.
What are the cues in [square brackets]?
Anything in square brackets on one line, such as [pause] or [slide 4], is shown in another colour and not counted as a spoken word, so it does not change the timing. Brackets that open on one line and close on another are treated as ordinary text.
How do I use it with teleprompter glass?
Tick Mirror left to right. A beam-splitter glass reflects the screen, so the mirrored text reads the right way round in the glass. Flip upside down is there for rigs that hold the screen the other way up. The reading line sits about a third of the way down: read the line inside the band. The controls at the bottom are not mirrored.
Which keys and gestures work?
Space plays and pauses, even when a button has the focus, and so does a tap or click on the text. The up and down arrows change the pace, left and right go back or forward about 5 seconds of reading, Home starts again from the top with the countdown, plus and minus change the text size, M mirrors, and Escape closes the prompter (in full screen, the first Escape leaves full screen). Scroll with the mouse wheel or drag the text to move it by hand.
Does it follow my voice?
It can, where your browser recognises speech on this device. Tick Follow my voice and choose the language you read in: the page then asks the browser whether it can recognise that language on this device, and some browsers first download the language, which you start with the Download button. While you read, the reading line moves to the line you are saying, and you can still scroll by hand. Recognition in the cloud is never used, so nothing you say leaves your device: where the browser cannot recognise the language on the device, the option says so and the script scrolls at the pace you set. If the microphone is not allowed, the prompter says so, and you scroll by hand or press Play for the set pace.
Is my script saved?
No. It stays in this tab only, and reloading or closing the tab clears it. Keep the script in a document and paste it, or open it as a .txt file, each time.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, yes.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The page loads a small script into your browser and every calculation runs on your device. You can check this yourself in the browser's network panel: after the page has loaded there are no upload requests. Closing the tab discards what you entered.
Do I need an account or to pay?
No. These basic tools are free and store nothing on our servers. The only limits are the tool's own: scripts up to 200,000 characters.
What does this page keep in my browser?
Nothing you open or type. While the tab is open, the tool pages keep a short list of the steps taken in it, in the tab's session storage: the step (page opened, started, succeeded, first success, used again or failed), the tool's name, the time, how many files were used and, for a failure, an error code; never a file name, the contents of a file or your text. It holds at most the latest 200 steps, and the browser deletes it when the tab closes. The page never sends it. Where a Report a problem button is shown, you can attach the last 20 steps to your report; nothing is attached unless you tick that box. In local storage the page keeps only choices you made: a Light or Dark theme until you choose System again, the language you picked with the EN / 中文 switch if it differs from your browser's language, and this tool in your recently used list if you switched that list on at the tools page.
