Make a vCard, a contact QR code and an email signature

Type your details once and download a vCard file people can add to their contacts, a QR code that does the same when scanned, an email signature with a plain-text version, and a background for video calls. Everything is made inside your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

vCard Maker

How it works

  1. Choose what to make: a contact file (vCard), a QR code, an email signature or a meeting background. Each shows the fields it uses; the rest wait under More details.
  2. Type your details, or open a .vcf file to start from it. All four use the same details, and the preview and the checks update as you type.
  3. Download the file, the QR code (without the photo, so it stays easy to scan) or the background, or copy the signature. Download contact kit (ZIP) holds the file, the QR code and the signature.

Questions

Which phones and programs open the .vcf file?

The file follows the vCard standard: version 3.0 (RFC 2426) by default, which iPhone Contacts, Android contacts, Outlook and Gmail import, or version 4.0 (RFC 6350) if you choose it. Version 3.0 has no place for the kind of an email or web address (work or personal), so a 3.0 file leaves it out; version 4.0 keeps it. Names in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other scripts are written in UTF-8. Each line ends with CRLF, long lines are folded at 75 bytes without splitting a character, and every file has N and FN, the name fields contacts apps look for. This site's tests read every file back with vobject, an independent vCard library, and read the QR code back with the zxing-cpp barcode reader.

What happens when someone scans the QR code?

The code holds the contact itself, not a link, so it works without internet and never expires. The phone's camera offers to add the contact; nothing is saved until the person confirms. Because the code holds the text, the photo is left out (it would make the code far too dense). The address goes in unless you untick Put the address in the QR code; the note goes in only if you tick Put the note in the QR code, which is off at first so that a private note is not printed by mistake.

Can I edit a contact I already have?

Yes: open its .vcf file. The page reads versions 2.1, 3.0 and 4.0 and fills in the fields it edits: name, organisation, title, up to five phone numbers, email and web addresses, one address, the note and a photo. Anything else in the file, such as a birthday or a second address, is named on the page and left out of the new file. Only the first contact of a file with several is opened. A file cut short, which ends before END:VCARD, still opens: the page says that it may be incomplete and lists what it could read from it. A photo in the file larger than 64 KB is reduced here to fit, in its own shape, and the page says from what size to what; one that cannot be read as a picture is left out, and the page says so.

How do I use the email signature?

Choose Email signature at the top, then press Copy signature and paste it into your mail program's signature settings; most mail programs keep the formatting. If pasting loses it, download the .html file or use the plain-text version, which the page always makes as well. The signature has no tracking images and no scripts. Its links take your accent colour when that colour reads on white at 4.5:1 or more, as text must; a lighter colour gives them a darker shade of it, which the page names under Accent colour, and the bar beside the signature keeps your colour. A logo is added only if you give the https address of a picture that is already online, because mail programs block pictures stored inside a signature.

Is my contact information stored or sent anywhere?

No. There is no account and the contact is not stored: the files are made in your browser and saved only where you download them. To change the details later, keep the .vcf file and open it here again.

What is the meeting background?

A 1920 × 1080 picture with your name, title and a QR code of your contact, to set as the background in Zoom, Teams or Google Meet; choose Meeting background at the top to make it. A long name takes up to two lines and a long title, with the organisation and department, up to three, in smaller type when needed; whatever still does not fit ends with "…" in the picture, and the page says so when you download it. Your own preview may show it mirrored; the other people in the call see it the right way round.

Can I download everything together?

Download contact kit (ZIP), under each of the four groups, includes the vCard, QR PNG and SVG, and HTML and plain-text email signatures from one snapshot of your details.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The page loads a small script into your browser and every calculation runs on your device. You can check this yourself in the browser's network panel: after the page has loaded there are no upload requests. Closing the tab discards what you entered.

Do I need an account or to pay?

No. These basic tools are free and store nothing on our servers. The only limits are the tool's own: 5 phone numbers, 5 email addresses and 5 web addresses per contact; photos are reduced to fit 64 KB and go into the file, not the QR code.

What does this page keep in my browser?

Nothing you open or type. While the tab is open, the tool pages keep a short list of the steps taken in it, in the tab's session storage: the step (page opened, started, succeeded, first success, used again or failed), the tool's name, the time, how many files were used and, for a failure, an error code; never a file name, the contents of a file or your text. It holds at most the latest 200 steps, and the browser deletes it when the tab closes. The page never sends it. Where a Report a problem button is shown, you can attach the last 20 steps to your report; nothing is attached unless you tick that box. In local storage the page keeps only choices you made: a Light or Dark theme until you choose System again, the language you picked with the EN / 中文 switch if it differs from your browser's language, and this tool in your recently used list if you switched that list on at the tools page.
