Word to PDF

Turn a Word document into a PDF laid out as Word lays it out: each section's page size, orientation and margins, its headers and footers with page numbers, the document's styles, numbered and bulleted lists, tables with their borders and shading, and pictures. The document is read inside your browser.

Questions

Is anything uploaded?

No. The document is read, laid out and made into a PDF inside your browser, and your file stays on your device. Text the PDF's built-in fonts cannot draw, such as Chinese, a Greek letter or a symbol, is drawn with this site's language font, which the page downloads from this site only when the document's text needs it.

What does the PDF keep from my document?

Each section's page size, orientation and margins, and its headers and footers, with page numbers and page counts; the styles of paragraphs and characters (sizes, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, colours, highlighting, superscript and subscript, capitals), alignment, indents, spacing and line spacing, tab stops with their dot leaders, numbered and bulleted lists, page breaks, headings held on the page of what follows them, and no paragraph's line left alone at a page's foot or top; tables with their column widths, borders, shading, merged cells and header rows repeated on each page; footnotes at the foot of the page that refers to them and endnotes at the end; and PNG and JPEG pictures, in the text or placed on the page; a picture in the text larger than the page's text area is drawn at the largest size that fits it.

What is not in the PDF?

Text boxes, shapes, charts and SmartArt; pictures in EMF, WMF, TIFF, GIF or BMP; comments; columns, whose text runs in one column; and equations, shown as plain text. Text flows around no picture. Before you convert, the page names what the document has of these.

Which fonts does the PDF use?

Helvetica, Times or Courier, by the kind of font the document names: Times for serif fonts such as Times New Roman or Cambria, Courier for fixed-width fonts, Helvetica for the others, such as Calibri or Arial. Each is fitted to the width of the font the document names, so that lines and pages break close to where Word breaks them; they can still break a little differently. Chinese is set in Noto Sans CJK.

Which files can it read?

Word documents in the .docx or .docm format, up to 50 MB; macros are not run. An older .doc document, a template, an OpenDocument .odt, an RTF, a Pages or a WPS file is refused with the way to save it as .docx. A document that needs a password to open cannot be read: remove the password in Word first.

How long can the document be?

Up to 2,000 pages in one PDF. A longer one is refused, with the advice to save a part of it as its own document.

Can it convert Chinese text?

Yes. Chinese is drawn with the Noto Sans CJK font this site serves: 2.3 MB for common characters, the full 21.7 MB font only when rarer ones are used. A character none of the fonts can draw, such as an emoji, is printed as ? and named on the page.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The page loads a PDF engine into your browser and every operation runs on your device. You can check this yourself in the browser's network panel: after the page has loaded there are no upload requests. Closing the tab discards the file.

Do I need an account or to pay?

No. These basic tools are free and never add a watermark. The only limits are the tool's own: documents up to 50 MB and 2,000 pages; PNG and JPEG pictures. Within them, the practical limit is your device's memory.

What about password-protected documents?

A document that needs a password to open cannot be read here: the tool says so as soon as you choose it and converts nothing. Open it in Word, remove the password (File, Info, Protect Document, Encrypt with Password, then clear the password), save it, and choose that file.

What does this page keep in my browser?

Nothing you open or type. While the tab is open, the tool pages keep a short list of the steps taken in it, in the tab's session storage: the step (page opened, started, succeeded, first success, used again or failed), the tool's name, the time, how many files were used and, for a failure, an error code; never a file name, the contents of a file or your text. It holds at most the latest 200 steps, and the browser deletes it when the tab closes. The page never sends it. Where a Report a problem button is shown, you can attach the last 20 steps to your report; nothing is attached unless you tick that box. In local storage the page keeps only choices you made: a Light or Dark theme until you choose System again, the language you picked with the EN / 中文 switch if it differs from your browser's language, and this tool in your recently used list if you switched that list on at the tools page.
