Connect ChatGPT or Claude to Matrix Tools and Transfer

Your assistant can run 50 supported Matrix Tools, including PDF, image, text and spreadsheet operations. With the permissions you choose, it can also list your transfers, check downloads and revoke a link. Connect by signing in to Matrix; no API Key needs to be copied. The Matrix connection is free on every Matrix plan; your assistant provider's own plan and access requirements still apply.

What a connected assistant can and cannot do

A connection gives the assistant four tools for Matrix Transfer, and you choose at connection time which permissions it gets:

Two things it can never do, whatever it asks for. It never sees a share link: the link is the only thing a recipient needs, so it stays on your Matrix pages. And it cannot send files in your name. Sending stays in your browser and in your own API keys.

Matrix Tools through the same connection

The same connection can also run 50 of the Matrix Tools on our server, beside Transfer's four tools. Tick Run tools (permission tools.run) when you connect: the consent screen says "Run Matrix tools on the files and text you send; nothing is kept after the run". The assistant then gets one tool for each family of the tools page (Organize pages, Edit pages, Optimize, Convert, Fill and sign, Privacy, Images, Media, Files and archives, Text and data, Sheets and documents, Design, and Everyday) and describe_operation, which tells it what an operation takes.

Tool inputs are processed on our server for that run only. Results you request are returned to ChatGPT or Claude as part of your chat. A tool that works on your files opens the Matrix panel in the chat: the files you choose there go from your device to our server for that run only, and the result comes back to the panel for you to download. We keep neither your files nor the result. The assistant is told what the run made (a summary, the names and sizes of the files, and data such as a form's field names when you asked for it), not the files themselves.

Encrypt a file, Decrypt a file and the CSR Generator are not offered, so their passphrase or private key never leaves your device.

Connect ChatGPT

ChatGPT adds your own connectors, which it calls apps, in Developer mode. OpenAI has moved that setting between menus more than once, so follow OpenAI's current instructions for Developer mode and MCP apps for where to switch it on; they also say which ChatGPT plans have it and what a workspace admin must allow first.

  1. Switch on Developer mode, as OpenAI's instructions describe.
  2. Create a new app and give this address as its MCP server URL: https://matrixai.group/mcp. Leave authentication on OAuth.
  3. ChatGPT sends you to Matrix. Sign in if you are not signed in, pick the space (your personal space or one of your Workspaces), tick the permissions, and press Connect.
  4. Back in ChatGPT, the Matrix app is on. Ask it something like "which of my transfers expire this week?".

ChatGPT identifies itself to Matrix with its published client document; no client id or secret is needed on either side.

Connect Claude

These steps follow Anthropic's instructions for custom connectors; if Claude's menus have changed, theirs are the current ones.

On a Free, Pro or Max plan (Free plans allow one custom connector):

  1. In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors. Press +, then Add custom connector.
  2. Paste this address as the remote MCP server URL: https://matrixai.group/mcp. Leave the OAuth client id and secret under Advanced settings empty: Claude registers itself. Press Add.
  3. Press Connect next to the new connector. Claude sends you to Matrix. Sign in if you are not signed in, pick the space, tick the permissions, and press Connect.
  4. Back in Claude, the connector is on. Whether Claude asks before it revokes depends on the connector's tool permissions in Claude, which you can set to ask every time.

On a Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner adds the connector once for the organisation: Organization settings, Connectors, Add, then Custom and Web, with the same address. Each member then opens Customize, Connectors, finds Matrix Transfer and presses Connect, which brings them to the Matrix steps above. Every member connects as themselves.

Connecting for a Workspace

One connection reaches one space. On the consent screen you choose your personal space or a Workspace you belong to; to reach another, connect again. In a Workspace the connection acts as you, with your role there: a Member's assistant sees that Member's transfers, an Owner's or Admin's sees the whole Workspace. If you leave the Workspace, the connection ends by itself.

The Workspace's Owner and Admins see every connection made to it, with the assistant, the person, the permissions and the last use, and can end any of them. They do not see what an assistant asked or read.

Ending a connection

Under Developers, in the AI assistants card, press End next to the connection. The assistant's next call fails at once, even if it still holds a token. A connection also ends by itself after 90 days (the assistant asks you to connect again), after 30 days without use, and when you change your password. Signing out of the website does not end it.

Removing the connector on the assistant's side stops the assistant from calling; ending it on Matrix is what stops the token. Do both if you are not sure.

What reaches the assistant

When the assistant reads a transfer, its title, message, file names and sizes become part of your chat, and your chat is kept by OpenAI or Anthropic under their terms. Nothing reaches them unless the assistant asks for it, and Matrix keeps one line per call in the connection's usage, which you can read on the Developers page. Share links never reach the assistant. When it runs a Matrix tool, it is told what the run made (a summary, the names and sizes of the files, and data such as a form's field names when you asked for it), not the files you choose in the Matrix panel; results you request are returned to it as part of your chat.

For the technical detail: Matrix is an OAuth 2.1 authorization server at https://matrixai.group/oauth for the MCP server at https://matrixai.group/mcp, with PKCE, ten-minute access tokens and rotating refresh tokens, following the Model Context Protocol's authorization specification. Only ChatGPT and Claude are accepted as clients.
